Ripon College issued the following announcement on Oct. 7
“Refugee Children at the Border,” a Zoom talk, will be presented Thursday, Oct. 14, as part of Latin Heritage Month at Ripon College. Presented by the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, the program will run from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The Zoom ID is 256 018 4018.
The speaker will be Enrique Morones, a longtime San Diego immigration activist and impassioned advocate for migrants as well as Latinos facing discrimination in the United States. He will discuss the humanitarian aspects of refugee children at the Mexico/U.S. border.
Morones’ advocacy spans decades. He is the founder of Gente Unida and other organizations that focus on immigration issues. Gente Unida advocates for and highlights those working for social justice and finding collective means to work across institutions to feed, protect, cloth and comfort those who have little access to resources because of their nationality, immigration status, age, gender or political/legal situations.
In 2009, Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon presented Morones with an award from the Human Rights Commission of Mexico. Morones’ 2012 memoir, The Power of One: The Story of the Border Angels, tells his story.
He frequently appears in media interviews, hosts podcasts and helps develop programs in support of the poor.
