Professor of Spanish Timothy Reed publishes new journal article

Q

An article by Professor of Spanish Timothy Reed is published in the spring issue of Hispanic Journal. “Garden Imagery, Hauntology, and the Semiotic in Adelaida García Morales’ El Sur.” It addresses gender roles in Francoist Spain, feminism and trauma studies.

The abstract reads: “In Adelaida García Morales’ 1985 novella El Sur, Adriana recounts various memories related to her deceased father on the night before she leaves his house forever. Her depiction of their problematic relationship reveals the extent to which she is haunted by his memory and thus becomes her narrative attempt to come to terms with the ghosts of the past.

“Critics have primarily focused on her attachment to her father, but there is no consensus about whether she can mitigate the psychological trauma caused by his marginalization, silence, depression and death by the end of her memoir. This article analyzes the role of garden imagery, hauntology and the semiotic throughout the work to show how they point toward her emotional emancipation. Through the process of revisiting the past and working through traumatic memories, Adriana learns that she can move on and thrive without him.”
