A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Town of Westford in Wisconsin on November 7, 2024. The request, made by us at Fond Du Lac Times, sought details about new voter registrations that occurred on November 5, 2024.
As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we believe access to such public records is essential for our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
In the FOIA request, we asked for a list of new voters who registered to vote on November 5, 2024. We requested this information under the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq., preferably in an electronic format.
Given our role in disseminating information to the public, we have also asked for a fee waiver as a media professional. This will enable us to continue our mission of reporting accurately and responsibly on matters that concern our community.
