Election results, outlook for 2023 to be discussed by panel Nov. 17

“After the Election: Now What?”, a panel discussion, will be presented Nov. 17 at Ripon College. The presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Kresge Little Theatre, East Hall, on the Ripon College campus. The talk is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Center for Politics and the People.

This panel discussion will analyze the state and national election results and explore the outlook for 2023. The panelists will be Charlie Sykes, founder and editor-at-large of The Bulwark, Bulwark Podcast, and an MSNBC contributor; Jessie Opoien, capitol bureau chief of The Capital Times newspaper in Madison, Wisconsin; and Emilee Fannon, politics and state government reporter at CBS 58 Milwaukee. The moderator will be Henrik Schatzinger, co-director of the Center for Politics and the People.

Sykes serves as the president of the Defending Democracy Together Institute, sits on the advisory board of the Democracy Fund, and is a member of the board of Stand Up Republic. From 1993 to 2016, he hosted a daily talk show on WTMJ radio in Milwaukee, and he has hosted the public affairs television show “Sunday Insight” on WTMJ-TV. He was a founder and editor-in-chief of Right Wisconsin, an online platform for conservative writers and thinkers. As a senior fellow at the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute, he also edited the group’s magazine Wisconsin Interest.

Sykes has written for numerous national publications and made frequent television appearances. His books include A Nation of Victims, Dumbing Down Our Kids, Profscam, The Hollow Men, The End of Privacy, 50 Rules Kids Won’t Learn in School, A Nation of Moochers, Fail U: The False Promise of Higher Education and How the Right Lost Its Mind.

Opoien joined The Capital Times in 2013, primarily covering government and politics. She served as opinion editor from 2019 to 2021, then returned to political reporting.

She previously wrote for newspapers in Ames, Iowa, and Oshkosh, Wisconsin, as a general assignment reporter, often covering county, state and national politics.

Fannon joined CBS 58 after serving as the capitol bureau chief for WKOW in Madison, Wisconsin, for three years. During her time in Madison, she covered the 2020 presidential election and interviewed major party candidates including Vice President Mike Pence, former Vice President Joe Biden, and other prominent figures tied to the Trump and Biden campaigns.

She received her master’s degree in political affairs reporting and began her career as a statehouse reporter at the Illinois State Capitol. Her coverage included the rise and fall of the longest budget impasse in modern day history as well as historic school funding reform.
