(Washington, D.C.) – On June 1, Congressman Glenn Grothman (WI-06) released the following statement regarding his vote in support of the bipartisan Fiscal Responsibility Act:
“During my time in Washington, there have been six debt ceiling increases,” said Grothman. “None of these bills did anything to curb spending and instead heightened spending and increased the deficit.
“Finally last night, the House overwhelmingly passed a debt limit increase that cut spending. In his Fiscal Year 2024 budget proposal, President Biden requested a six percent spending increase, even with inflation hovering around five percent. This bill achieves historic spending reforms by halting President Biden’s out-of-control spending habits and bringing us back to sub-Fiscal Year 2022 levels.
“While not perfect, the framework in place makes much-needed spending reforms, streamlines the permitting process, and holds the Executive Branch accountable for its deliberate, willful fiscal irresponsibility.
“The cut on nondefense spending will be the largest cut in nondefense discretionary spending in history. We wanted further cuts, but in divided government, all parties must sign off on all provisions.
“Additionally, overall spending levels will again be taken up in appropriations bills over the next few months instead of needlessly packaging them together as an omnibus as we are closer to a return to regular order than we have been during my tenure in Washington.
“It is my priority to ensure work requirements for people in low-income housing match the qualifications for food stamps, along with negotiating cuts for woke bureaucracies as we debate the details of the budget for the Fiscal Year ending September 30, 2023.
“I will continue to fight for reductions in spending. It is my belief that aside from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, this is the most conservative bill that I have voted on that will become law. I look forward to instituting more substantive cuts in the future under a Republican-controlled Senate and White House."
The Fiscal Responsibility Act:
- Reduces non-defense discretionary spending by $40 billion in Fiscal Year 2024.
- Streamlines the permitting process to increase American energy production.
- Lifts the maximum age for work requirements for SNAP’s able-bodied adults without dependents from 49 to 54.
- Rescinds $1.4 billion in funding from the Inflation Reduction Act to hire IRS enforcement agents.
- Requires borrowers to restart payments on student loan debt, saving taxpayers an estimated $5 billion per month.
- Enacts the first ever statutory Administrative Pay-Go to hold the executive branch accountable for the full cost of executive rules and regulations.
- Slashes $400 million from the CDC’s “Global Health Fund” that sends taxpayer money to China.
U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-Glenbeulah) is serving his fifth term representing Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
