Family activities often fill the summer months, but it's important to remember a key task for student-athletes: scheduling a sports physical. In Wisconsin, the WIAA mandates that student-athletes undergo a sports physical every two years before engaging in school sports or extracurricular activities. With fall sports commencing in August, July is an ideal time to arrange this check-up.
Parents have the option of booking with their child's primary care provider or Watertown Regional Medical Center's Occupational Health team. The purpose of a sports physical is to ensure that children are healthy and ready for safe participation in athletics.
During the visit, several aspects will be reviewed: medical history, routine physical examination, immunizations (if needed), and completion of necessary forms for school or sports participation. Healthcare providers will assess height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate; examine the heart and lungs; screen vision; and evaluate muscles, bones, and joints.
It is important to distinguish between a sports physical and an annual physical. A sports physical focuses on readiness for athletic activities while an annual exam provides a comprehensive view of overall health including behavioral and social well-being. If an annual check-up is already scheduled, it can include the required elements of a sports physical.
These examinations offer an opportunity to address any health concerns parents might have regarding their child.
Watertown Regional Medical Center’s Occupational Health Clinic currently offers these exams at $50 until August 1st. Appointments can be made by calling 920-262-4253.
