The Wisconsin State Assembly has approved a constitutional amendment that would require photo identification for voting in the state. Representative William Penterman voted in favor of the measure, which received significant support from Assembly members.
“Passing this resolution will ensure our elections remain secure,” said Representative Penterman. “Requiring photo ID at the polls establishes trust, and is a simple part of the process to maintain the integrity of our elections.”
With approval from both the Assembly and Senate, the amendment will now go before Wisconsin voters in a statewide referendum scheduled for April 1, 2025. According to a 2024 Pew Research Center poll, 81% of Americans support voter ID requirements. Wisconsin has had voter ID laws in place for more than ten years.
The amendment emphasizes that photographic identification is necessary for voting. Voters who do not have valid ID on Election Day can still cast a provisional ballot, as allowed under current law.
“Wisconsinites want it to be easy to vote and hard to cheat,” said Penterman. “This amendment will strengthen public confidence in our electoral system and move Wisconsin forward.”
Penterman, a Republican, was elected to represent Wisconsin's 38th House district in 2025, succeeding Barbara Dittrich.
