Later that day, at 16:41 UTC, Grothman commented further on congressional pay during the shutdown and placed responsibility for the closure on Senate Democrats: "I’ve asked that my pay be withheld during the shutdown. Why? Because if Democrats can’t do their job and keep the government open, no member of Congress deserves a paycheck.

Glenn Grothman has represented Wisconsin in Congress since first winning election in 2014. In each subsequent general election—2016 against Sarah Lloyd (57.2%–37.3%), 2018 against Dan Kohl (55.5%–44.5%), 2020 against Jessica King (59.2%–40.7%), and most recently in 2024 against John Zarbano (61.2%–38.7%)—he secured victories by significant margins.
