Construction is underway on a new 3,892-square-foot area on the lower level of SSM Health Waupun Memorial Hospital’s recent two-story addition to welcome eye care services starting in late spring to early summer 2023.
The $4.2 million project will offer the services of an ophthalmologist, two optometrists, and five eye care assistants using advanced diagnostic capabilities. In addition, the services of a retina specialist and pediatric ophthalmologist will be available. Patients will have the convenience of receiving eye surgical procedures within the hospital thanks to its direct connection.
“At this time, if an individual requires eye surgery, like cataract surgery, they need to travel outside of the Waupun community,” says DeAnn Thurmer, president of SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital & SSM Health Waupun Memorial Hospital. “Our surgical team has the expertise, facilities, and technology to keep these services local and convenient.”
The new area will feature eight exam rooms, laser/procedure room, optical coherence tomography scan (OCT) room, three provider offices, and contact lens room. Patients will enjoy a direct entrance and newly created and easily accessible parking just off Main and Beaver Dam streets.
The new area will also feature an optical shop offering a wide selection of frames at competitive prices and customer service from our caring team members who bring extensive optical experience. Staff will work with customers to find options, including discounts, if the optical shop is not considered in-network. Frames will be accessible for all ages, including infants.
Plans have been in progress since summer 2022.
“We know that many of the individuals and families we serve appreciate being able to receive so many health care services right within their own community,” according to Mike Drees, SSM Health Fond du Lac Regional Clinic chief operating officer. “Eye care service is no exception. This new location will allow patients to be served close to home with little to no travel and still receive excellent care from our clinic providers.”
The SSM Health Greater Fond du Lac Region is working with CD Smith Construction as the project’s general contractor, with Zimmerman Architectural Studios, Inc. serving as architect.
