Watertown Regional Medical Center is highlighting National Breastfeeding Month this August by emphasizing support for all parents as they navigate feeding their newborns. The hospital recognizes the unique challenges that come with feeding a baby and aims to provide resources for families, regardless of their chosen method.

Surveys indicate that breastfeeding can be more difficult than many expect. According to What to Expect, almost 60% of mothers found nursing harder than anticipated, while 12% reported they tried but were unable to breastfeed. Research from the National Institutes of Health shows that about 70% of mothers experienced problems such as pain, fatigue, or concerns about milk supply in the first month.

The hospital stresses that there is no single right way to feed a baby. It notes that breast milk contains nutrients and antibodies important for a child’s development in the first year and may lower infection risks and promote parent-child bonding. However, it also acknowledges that some parents may choose formula or combine methods depending on their circumstances.

Support at Watertown Regional Medical Center includes free breastfeeding classes, one-on-one consultations with a Certified Lactation Consultant, prenatal and childbirth preparation courses covering feeding education, and practical guidance on various aspects of infant feeding. The hospital encourages parents-to-be to seek out resources early and assures them ongoing support throughout their journey.

A spokesperson said: “Bringing a child into the world is a beautiful, emotional, and often unpredictable ride. Whether you’re a first-time parent or adding to your growing family, feeding your baby can be one of the most intimate and challenging parts of the journey.”

Another statement from the hospital reads: “But here’s the truth: feeding your baby is a deeply personal experience, and there’s no single way it’s supposed to look or feel. Whether it comes naturally, brings unexpected challenges, or evolves over time – you’re doing something incredibly important, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.”

The center reminds parents they are not alone in facing these challenges: “If you’re struggling with feeding – whether it’s breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or anything in between – help is just a phone call away. Parenthood doesn’t come with a manual, but it does come with a community. And we’re proud to be part of yours.”
