A Jefferson resident credits the staff at Watertown Regional Medical Center for saving his toe after a series of medical complications this spring. Gary L., who has lived in Jefferson for 54 years, shared his experience as a patient at the hospital.
He first noticed an open sore on his left foot in early May and, after seeing several providers, was referred to the Wound Clinic in Johnson Creek. There, he learned he might be at risk of losing his toe and was subsequently sent to Dr. Yaeggi at Rock River Foot & Ankle.
Dr. Yaeggi expressed concern about circulation issues and suggested further testing. After waiting over a week for a response from another health system without success, Gary returned to Dr. Yaeggi, who recommended seeking care at Watertown Regional Medical Center and offered to contact the team directly.
"Within 10 to 15 minutes, I got a call—and I was in that same afternoon for testing. Talk about fast service," Gary said.
Testing revealed four blockages below the knee and three completely blocked arteries in his left leg. The approval process for treatment took about two weeks as expected. On the day of the procedure, Dr. Volkert performed surgery in the Cath Lab, successfully restoring circulation.
"The care that you'll receive here is top notch," Gary said.
He added that one nurse remembered him from a previous visit, which he appreciated during his recovery process.
"I’m incredibly thankful for the quick, compassionate care I received. It made all the difference," he said.
